| Blessed Eustace Kugler |
Joseph Kugler (religious name: Eustace [Eustachius]) was born on January 15, 1867 in the Kingdom of Bavaria as the son of a blacksmith. In 1880 he began to work as an apprentice locksmith. However he had a very serious accident where he fell from a scaffold and injured his leg - the consequences remained with him throughout his life resulting in a slight limp. He bore his physical limitations with heroic patience. In 1884 he moved in with his sister who was married to a blacksmith and he later began working once again but this time with his brother.
In Reichenbach-am-Regen, this deeply religious youth came into contact with the Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God that was setting up a Centre for the disabled there. Blessed Eustace entered the Order in 1893, taking temporary vows in 1895, and making his Solemn Profession in 1898. After serving in various centres in the Bavarian Province, in 1925 the Order elected him Provincial Superior, the post he was to retain until his death.
During World War II he opposed Adolf Hitler and the Nazi regime, being quite vocal in his criticism and denunciation of the policies regarding euthanasia of both the old and the sick. This bought him into unwanted contact with the Gestapo who interrogated him several times due to this opposition.
Blessed Eustace died in Regensburg on June 10, 1946, aged 79.
