Saints celebrated on the 8th of June
WELCOME!
BLESSED MARY OF THE DIVINE HEART |
Blessed Mary of the Divine Heart, born Maria Droste zu Vischering in Münster, on September 8, 1863, came from a wealthy, noble German family. Her parents were devout Catholics: Count Clemens Droste zu Vischering and of Countess Helen von Galen.
In 1883, at the chapel of the Castle of Darfeld, she is said to have had a vision of Jesus Christ who told her: "Thou shalt be the wife of my heart". On August 5 of that same year, Maria told her parents of her desire to become a religious.
She joined the Catholic Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd. In 1894 she was sent to Portugal, where she was initially assistant to the mother superior of the convent in Lisbon. In May 1894, Sister Mary was appointed to the office of the Mother Superior of the convent in Porto.
She is best known for having influenced Pope Leo XIII to consecrate the world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Pope Leo XIII called the solemn consecration "the greatest act of my pontificate".
She died in Porto on June 8, 1899. Pope Paul VI beatified Sister Mary of the Divine Heart in 1975.
