SAINT LEOGONTIA, VIRGIN

Saint Leogontia was an early medieval virgin saint venerated primarily in Clermont-Ferrand (Claromontium), France. Historical details regarding her life are minimal, but her memory is preserved through ancient regional liturgical records. Her relics rest in Clermont, France, inside the ancient Church of St Cassius (Église Saint-Cassien). She is entombed alongside other localized early saints, including Saint Cassius, Saint Victorinus, and Saint Georgia. Early ecclesiastical tables, such as the Tabula Illidiana (associated with Saint Allyre/Illidius), specifically designate her as a holy virgin (virgo). Historically, her exact day of death (dies natalis) was unknown, leading some martyrologists like Saussay to relegate her to a volume appendix. However, the hagiographical work Gynæceo sacro recognizes her commemoration on May 15.

He was master of arts in one of our universities; but going abroad to Douay, in Flanders, was received into the English college there, 1576, and made priest in 1577; and the year following sent upon the mission.
