THE AUGUSTINIANS

| A 17th century depiction of Augustinians |
The spiritual foundation comes from Saint Augustine of Hippo, an early Christian bishop and theologian who lived from 354 to 430 AD. He wrote a rule of life for clergy and monastics emphasizing unity, sharing, and prayer. The official Order of Saint Augustine (OSA) formed in March 1244 when Pope Innocent IV united several groups of hermits in Italy into a single mendicant order. Unlike traditional monks who stayed in one monastery, Augustinian friars travelled to preach, teach, and help people in growing medieval cities. Members take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience. They focus on living in harmony with "one mind and one heart" searching for God together. The Rule of Saint Augustine adapts monastic life for people working actively in the world. The order includes canons regular (priests serving local parishes) and friars (who balance prayer with apostolic work). Today, thousands of Augustinians live and serve in over 40 countries worldwide. They run schools, universities, parishes, and social outreach programmes. Pope Leo XIV is the first pope from the Order of Saint Augustine.
