Blessed Domitian

Blessed Domitian (8th century), also known as Domitian of Millstatt or Domitian of Carinthia, is regarded as a promoter of Christianity in Carinthia [Austria].

Relics attributed to him are housed in the Domitian Chapel, which was added to the collegiate church of Millstatt Abbey in 1492. The history of his veneration is documented in a dedicated room at the Abbey Museum in Millstatt. For instance, a 9th-century fragment - believed to be part of his original funerary inscription - can be viewed there. A Romanesque reliquary shrine has also survived. A "Domitian Trail" (Domitianweg) has been established within the parish of Millstatt; part of this trail is a 1994 sculpture by Giorgio Igne depicting Blessed Domitian, which was installed in Lake Millstatt.

The Domitian Trail spans 16 kilometers, leading from the Domitian statue in Millstatt - via the Stations of the Cross to the Calvary Chapel, the parish church in Obermillstatt, and the Maria Schnee pilgrimage church in Matzelsdorf - on to the Hohe Kreuz and the Millstatt Abbey Church. Pilgrims on the Domitian Trail are accompanied by humanity’s great existential questions: across three sections, the six stations ask, "Who am I? Why am I going? Where do my steps lead?" Twenty-five panels provide accompanying psalm texts to offer food for reflection.

There are few verified facts regarding the life of Blessed Domitian. According to legend, he lived in present-day Carinthia towards the end of the 8th century, during the reign of Charlemagne.

According to Carinthian lore, Blessed Domitian - who had settled by Lake Millstatt and ruled Carinthia as a duke - had been originally a pagan and was converted to Christianity following the accidental death of his son by drowning. This version of events was likely influenced by the founding legend of Kremsmünster Abbey.
