BLESSED OLINTO MARELLA, PRIEST


Olinto Giuseppe Marella was born on June 14, 1882 in Pellestrina. He studied in Rome and was a classmate of Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, the future Pope John XXIII. Cardinal Aristide Cavallari ordained him to the priesthood on December 17, 1904 and immediately Father Olinto manifested his vocation to solidarity by founding a popular recreation centre where he welcomed the poorest children and educating them. Around the same time he was assigned to teach in seminaries in the Diocese of Chioggia. There, in addition to theology, he taught philosophy and humanities.

In 1909 the Church suspended his pastoral work because he had invited an excommunicated priest, Romolo Murri, into his home. Father Olinto accepted the suspension with humility and obedience. Years later, Cardinal Giovanni Nasalli Rocca di Corneliano rehabilitated him.

He kept on working with the poor and homeless in Bologna, and collecting funds for shelters and chapels. Father Olinto would make it his business to sit on a stool on the side of the street and would preach to those who came to him to listen. Some other priests objected to his work as being too evangelical but he had the support of Pope John XXIII.

Father Olinto died on September 6, 1969 and was proclaimed Venerable on March 27, 2013 after Pope Francis recognized that he had lived a life of heroic virtue. A miracle attributed to his intercession was recognised in 2019. His beatification took place in Bologna on October 4, 2020.

BLESSED RICHARD NEWPORT, PRIEST AND MARTYR Richard Newport, alias Smith , was born in Northamptonshire and performed his studies abroad, partly in the college of Rheims (if he be the Richard Smith whom I find in the Douay diary sent to Rome in 1586) and partly in that of Rome, where he was made priest. From thence he was sent upon the English mission, and behaved himself in such a manner as justly to acquire the character of a laborious missionary; being withal remarkably successful in bringing home many strayed sheep to the fold of Christ, to which his apostolical way of living did not a little contribute.  He was several times apprehended and cast into prison, and twice banished.
