WELCOME!

BLESSED BENIGNA CARDOSO DA SILVA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR

Benigna Cardoso, a Brazilian teenager known as "Menina Benigna", was killed in Santana do Cariri, 532 km from Fortaleza (Ceara state), after resisting an attempted rape. She was born on October 15, 1928. Her father died some time before her birth and her mother passed away around the time she turned one. It was following this that the sisters Rosa and Honorina Sisnando adopted Benigna and her three older siblings.

From a very young age, Benigna liked to take walks with her siblings in between her taking care of the household chores; she was likewise a regular attendee at Mass. She frequently read the Bible, and was known for her great devotion to her faith. Generously she would attend to those in need, especially the elderly. On the afternoon of October 24, 1941, she was on an errant fetching water near a forest when she was attacked by a youngster who hid in the bushes. She resisted the sexual abuse with all her might to defend her purity and to prevent any sin from being committed. Even when the attacker brandished a machete, she did not yield. As a result she was stabbed to death.

A diocesan process was subsequently opened to investigate her life, in addition to the circumstances surrounding her death, in order to ascertain if she died "in defensum castitatis" (if she died to protect herself as a chaste virgin during the attack). The diocesan process was opened on March 16, 2013 and concluded on September 21, 2013. Pope Francis approved her beatification in a decree issued on October 2, 2019; her beatification took place in Ceara on October 24, 2022.

PRAYER:

May the intercession of Blessed Benigna commend us to you, so that through her merits we may obtain that which we cannot accomplish by our own. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
