Nesmes Masse [Massé], one of the first Jesuits sent to the New World, was born August 3, 1575 at Lyon. The eldest son of Francois Masse, a baker, he entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus at Avignon on August 22, 1595, taking the name Enemond [Énemond]. Immediately following his ordination, he requested to be sent as a missionary.
Having arrived in Acadia in 1611, he was taken prisoner by the English two years later. The English sent him back to France, upon which he served as the rector of La Fleche College for more than ten years. In 1625, he travelled to Quebec. There he lived with the Recollets, and Father Charles Lalemant entrusted to him the work of completing Notre-Dame-des-Anges, in which the missionaries began to live in 1626. Enemond was once again taken prisoner by the English in 1629 and he went back to Europe.
He returned to the New World a third time in 1633 with Samuel de Champlain and Jean de Brebeuf. As he was in advanced in age, he did more sedentary work in the mission field, teaching and translating, mostly at Sillery. He died there on May 12, 1646. A monument was erected to his honour at this place on the site of the old Jesuit Church which stood on the bank of the Saint Lawrence River, a short distance from Quebec City. The monument reads, 'The inhabitants of Sillery Have erected this Monument to the Memory of Pere Enemond Masse S J, First Missionary in Canada. Buried in 1646'
