ALL SAINTS CELEBRATED IN NOVEMBER
Saints celebrated on the 6th of November
WELCOME!
Saint Efflam (Efflamm, Inflanannus) is honoured in various Breton chapels, the Église Saint-Efflam in Plestin-les-Grèves, and the Vallée des Saints. A historic well in Plestin-les-Grèves, the water of which is said to have healing properties, also exists.
Saint Efflam was the son of an Irish king. While he still lay hidden in his mother’s womb, many men and matrons saw much in visions concerning the virtues that would be his.
Born in the late-fifth, early-sixth century he married very young to Enora (also known as Honora), a daughter of an Irish king, as his parents wished, but on their wedding night, Efflam and Enora took a vow to live in a chaste, virginal marriage.
A while later, Efflam left Ireland, travelled to Brittany, and lived there as a hermit and missionary. Some accounts relate that Enora accompanied him.
Efflam's life and holiness always fascinated the locals, and he the subject of numerous folk stories. According to one Breton legend, for instance, he and King Arthur defeated a dragon in Plestin-les-Grèves that had been demanding human sacrifices.
Saint Efflam died in the late-sixth century, although the exact year in which he passed away is unknown.
