SAINT JEAN DE LALANDE, MARTYR

Martyrdom of Fathers Brebeuf and Lalemant, two of Saint Jean de Lalande's fellow Canadian Martyrs - Artist: Joseph Légaré

Jean de Lalande [John de Lalande] was born in the Norman seaport of Dieppe and was probably in New France by 1642. He served on the staff of the Jesuit residence at Three Rivers until he set out from Quebec on September 24, 1646 with Father Isaac Jogues, two or three Hurons and a Huron-Iroquois. Jean de Lalande volunteered to accompany Father Jogues despite that missionary’s description of the hardships of the life he led and the dangers he faced because of the conflicts between tribes. The Hurons had asked Father Jogues to lead them on an embassy to the Mohawks to negotiate a treaty.

They were captured by a Mohawk war party. Father Jogues was tomahawked over the head. Jean de Lalande, too, was killed (on November 19, 1646) at Ossernenon, a village near Albany, New York.

Jean de Lalande was beatified in 1925 by Pope Pius XI, who canonized him on June 29, 1930, with his seven fellow martyrs.

Their collective feast has been fixed on October 19; their major pilgrimage site is the Shrine of the Canadian Martyrs, Midland, Ontario, Canada.

PRAYER:

May the intercession of Saint Jean commend us to you, so that through his merits we may obtain that which we cannot accomplish by our own. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
