| Encyclopedia of Saints |
According to an account by Saint Gregory of Tours, this Saint Paul was sent from Rome to France in the middle or towards the end of the 3rd century to proclaim the Gospel there. Although his life did not end in martyrdom, he nevertheless had to endure much for the sake of the name of Jesus. Prudentius states that he brought renown to the city of Narbonne. According to the Roman Martyrology* and other ancient records (cf. Bollandists*, Jan. II, 94 and 763), he lived much earlier and was the proconsul Sergius Paulus who was baptized by the Apostle Paul, left behind at Narbonne during the Apostle's journey to Spain, and ordained bishop there. The authenticity of this tradition has also been acknowledged and defended in recent times by Gams*.
