SAINT AUGUSTA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR
SAINT AUGUSTA, VIRGIN AND MARTYR |
Saint Augusta (March 27), a virgin and martyr of Serravalle in the March of Treviso (Marchia Tarvisina) in the Venetian region, was imprisoned and cruelly tortured at the instigation of her own father, who had discovered her at prayer. Her torments included having her teeth knocked out and being suspended between two trees over a fire. When none of this harmed her, she was beheaded with a sword. According to the work Attribute der Heiligen* [Attributes of the Saints], she is usually pictured with a funeral pyre (the origin of which is unknown to us) accompanied by a sword.
