SEBASTIAN COMES, MARTYR
Sebastian (Sebastianus) Comes, commemorated on March 27, a martyr in Carthage, was killed for his Catholic faith during the reign of the Arian king Genseric. A certain martyrology printed in Liège in 1624 makes mention of him in this way:
In order to show the king that he was wrong in demanding a second baptism from him, he had white bread from the royal table placed before him and said: "Before this bread was placed before the king as food, the flour was carefully cleaned of the chaff and the whole thing was allowed to pass through water and fire. Thus I have passed through the mill and the sieve of the Catholic Church, purified with the baptismal water and made perfect with the fire of the Holy Spirit (confirmation). Now - do have this bread soaked in water again and put it in the oven once more. If, through this process, it becomes better than it is at present, I will do your will." The Bollandists* mention Sebastian Comes among the praetermissi. (III. 686)
