SAINT ADALPRETUS, BISHOP OF TRENT, MARTYR
The name Adalpretus is derived from the Old German pret, bert, meaning bright, shining.
Saint Adalpretus (Albertus, Adelpertus, [Adelpreto]), commemorated on March 27, was Bishop of Trent. He ascended to this episcopal see in 1160 or 1161 and received many privileges from Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, which enabled him to restore his diocese to its best. When, in 1181, he and his soldiers attempted to reclaim some church property that had been unlawfully confiscated, henchmen secretly pursued him, attacked from behind and pierced him with a lance. The villains inflicted this fatal injury on the holy bishop near Roveredo in Tyrol. Thus he is venerated as a martyr in Roveredo.
