SAINT AIGULPH AND COMPANIONS, MARTYRS

Saint Aigulph (Aigulphus) and his Companions - specifically including Trucharius and Frongentius - are venerated as martyrs on September 3. Born around the year 630 at Blois (Blesis) on the Loire, Aigulph entered the newly founded monastery of Fleury at an early age, distinguishing himself there through piety as well as insight and wisdom. Hagiographers tell us that, when sent to Monte Cassino by his abbot, Mummolus, Aigulph retrieved the bodies of Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastica (though likely only fragments thereof), thereby greatly enriching his monastery with this treasure. 

When the monks of Lérins sought him as their abbot, he went there and established exemplary order, yet also incurred the hatred of the wicked. Some of those who detested his implementation of stricter rules, conspired against Aigulph, bound him, took him by ship out to sea, and murdered him and three devoted brethren on the island of Capraja, near the coast of Tuscany. This gruesome deed was committed around the year 675.

While some sources claim that thirty-three companions were killed alongside him, it is more probable that there were only three: the two already named and one other, whose name remains unknown. Their holy bodies were brought to Lérins, where God glorified them through many miracles.
