SAINT EXUPERANTIUS, BISHOP OF CINGOLI
The name Exuperantius (Exsuperantius) is derived from the Latin exsuperans, meaning excellent.
Saint Exuperantius, French: St-Exupérance, an African by birth, was the son of Eulasius and Perpetua. Whether the father adhered to paganism or to a heretic doctrine is not quite certain; but his mother Perpetua seems to have been a Christian. At the age of twelve Exuperantius received baptism, and after some time left his native country for Rome.
A very zealous proclaimer of the gospel, Exuperantius became bishop of Cingoli, and died there after 15 years of office, distinguished by the gift of miracles. According to his biography, he was ordained bishop of Cingoli by Pope Paschasius; but there never was a pope of that name, and perhaps it should be put "Paschalis," which would mean that Exuperantius flourished in the first half of the ninth century, because Pope Paschal I. ruled the Church of God from A.D. 817-824. Incidentally, Exuperantius is not listed in the Roman Martyrology*. (II. 602. 1148)
