SAINTS PAPIAN AND COMPANIONS, BISHOPS AND MARTYRS OF AFRICA Saints Papian ( Papianus, Papinianus ), Mansuet (Mansuetus), Valerian (Valerianus), Urban (Urbanus) , Crescens, Eustachius (Eustratius), Cresconius, Crescentianus,, Felix, Hortulanus, and Floxianus (Florentianus) were all bishops and martyrs in Africa. They lived under the Arian king Genseric at the time of the Vandal persecution, and were taken prisoner for steadfast defence of the Catholic faith. Saints Papian and Mansuet were burned with red-hot irons and died during this torture. The former was bishop of Utica, the latter of Uricita. The remaining nine bishops, viz. (according to Baronius* notae) Valerian of Aba, Urbanus of Girba, Crescens of Aqua, Eustachius of Sufetum, Cresconius of Eense, Felix of Adrumetum, Crescentianus and Hortulanus of the region of Tripoli, Florianus of Vicessebratum were sent into exile, and ...
