SAINT VITALIAN, BISHOP OF CAPUA, CONFESSOR Saint Vitalian ( Vitalianus ), Bishop and Confessor, is commemorated on July 16 ; alternatively January 10 or December 30 . This saintly Bishop of Capua ( Terra di Lavoro ) - whose name is also included in the Roman Martyrology * - lived and died in the 7th century. Nothing, however, is known about his life. Around the year 1120, during the pontificate of Callixtus II , his relics were translated to Catanzaro. Legend has it that the miracles associated with these relics - which had occurred up until 1584, when a lady-in-waiting was buried in their vicinity - ceased from that time onward. His veneration is widespread throughout Southern Italy. As noted in Migne *, he is often depicted walking upon the water.
