Saints celebrated on the 16th of July
WELCOME!
SAINT VITALIAN, BISHOP OF CAPUA, CONFESSOR
Saint Vitalian (Vitalianus), Bishop and Confessor, is commemorated on July 16; alternatively January 10 or December 30. This saintly Bishop of Capua (Terra di Lavoro) - whose name is also included in the Roman Martyrology* - lived and died in the 7th century. Nothing, however, is known about his life. Around the year 1120, during the pontificate of Callixtus II, his relics were translated to Catanzaro. Legend has it that the miracles associated with these relics - which had occurred up until 1584, when a lady-in-waiting was buried in their vicinity - ceased from that time onward. His veneration is widespread throughout Southern Italy. As noted in Migne*, he is often depicted walking upon the water.
