SAINT DOMINIC NICHOLAS DINH DAT, MARTYR
Today we remember Saint Dominic Nicholas Dinh Dat, martyr. He was born in 1803 in Phu Nhai, Vietnam.
During the persecutions, being a soldier under Emperor Minh Mang, he was ordered by the army to renounce the Christian faith and prove it by trampling a crucifix; he refused and was tortured until he relented and apostasised.
HE WROTE TO THE EMPEROR
Having re-gained his freedom, he deeply regretted his fall and wrote to the emperor that he was a Christian and would remain one for ever. Thereupon he was arrested and strangled to death on July 18, 1839. St Dominic Nicholas is one of the Martyrs of Vietnam (collective feast day: November 24). He was beatified in 1900, canonised in 1988.
PRAYER:
Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that we who celebrate the anniversary of the death of your holy martyr Dominic Nicolas Dinh Dat, may by his intercession be delivered from all evils that threaten us. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
