WELCOME!
SAINT SOZON, MARTYR
Saint Sozon was a Martyr in Nicomedia who emerged unharmed from the fire into which he was thrown and died in peace. So the Greek menea*.
In the Roman martyrology, on the other hand, a [4th century] Martyr of the same name at Pompeiopolis in Cilicia is listed on September 7, who was, after various other tortures, burned to death at the stake.
HE BEARS THE SURNAME "THE SHEPHERD"
He bears the surname: the shepherd (opilio), probably from his occupation, and wears shoes with pierced spines (on pictures) as a reminder of the torture he suffered. That he smashed a silver idol and gave the pieces to the poor is doubtful. His legend can be found in detail in Surius*. They are no doubt identical.
[St Sozon is one of the patrons of those suffering from foot ailments.]
