SAINT APPHIA, MARTYR

According to the Roman Martyrology, Saint Apphia (Appias, Apia) was a disciple of St Paul the Apostle and a Martyr at Colossae.

Her name is also found Philemon (verse 2, [see below]), where St Paul sends greetings "to Apphia, the well-beloved sister". According to Chrysostom and Theodoret, she is said to have been the wife of Philemon.

From Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus and from our brother Timothy; to our dear fellow worker Philemon,

our sister Apphia, our fellow soldier Archippus and the church that meets in your house.

Grace and the peace of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ." (Philemon 1-3)

PRAYER:

Grant, we beseech you, almighty God, that the venerable feast of Saint Apphia may increase our devotion and promote our salvation. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.
