ALIGERNUS OF MONTE CASSINO, ABBOT
The venerable Aligernus of Monte Cassino received his academic training at the monastery of St Paul in Rome, took his vows there and subsequently became prior (provost) on Monte Cassino and finally on October 25, 949 he was unanimously elected abbot there, in which role he rendered extraordinary services to the monastery.
For a long time it had lain in rubble - the fields were devastated, the landlords scattered; but his tireless activity succeeded in putting everything back in good order.
He gave the abbot Nilus a dwelling near the monastery for himself and his monks, and allowed his brothers to take advantage of the presence of this distinguished religious and to be edified by his unctuous speeches.
After having presided over his monastic family for 37 years in sad and happy times, he died in 986. (Mab.)
