ANDRÉ D'ESPINAY, THE CARDINAL OF LYON

André d'Espinay came from a noble family in Gaul and entered the monastery of St Martin, which belonged to the Cluniac reform. He was first bishop of Bordeaux, then archbishop of Arles and finally of Lyon.

Because of his extraordinary talents he was well-liked by Charles VIII and Louis XII.

Pope Innocent VIII invested him with the purple.

Rich in merits, he died in the year 1500. In our source he is counted among the "venerable". (Buc. Suppl.)
