BLESSED BERNOLD OF OTTOBEUREN, PRIEST AND RELIGIOUS
Blessed Bernold (Bernoldus), monk and priest at the monastery at Ottobeuren in Swabia, Diocese of Augsburg [Germany], who lived in the eleventh century, is a rare example of austerity and self-denial. He died with a reputation for holiness. In 1189, because of the many miracles with which God glorified his memory, his body was raised from the former tomb and placed in the St Michael's Choir, which already housed the relics of St Hatto and St Bruno.
In 1553 the relics of the three monks mentioned were transferred to the chapter house and sealed in a stone coffin, and now they rest in the wall niche next to the altar of St Johann of Nepomuk (John of Nepomuk, John Nepomucene) in the monastery church. The first translation is celebrated in the Benedictine Order on November 25. (Brown.) (Blessed Bernold is commemorated on July 4 in some calendars.)
