BLESSED GERARD, ABBOT
This godly abbot, as Lechner calls him (in Butler's work he bears the title "saint"), was a pupil of Bishop Fulbert of Chartres.
Desiring higher perfection, he entered the monastery of Lagny (Latiniacum). There his conscientious observation of the monastic rule and his serious demeanor mixed with gentle friendliness made him esteemed to all.
After some time he was appointed Abbot of Crespy (Crispiacum). In this function he travelled to Normandy to visit Duke Richard. The latter persuaded Gerard to take over the management of the Fontenelle Abbey, which had fallen into complete disrepair. Gerard gave in and started working with all his might to restore discipline and order in this monastery when an evil-minded man killed him on November 29, 1031. (Mg., Lech.)
