VENERABLE MARIA RUIZ
Of a noble family and raised Christian, Maria Ruiz, of Alcazar, was very devout from an early age. In her zeal for heavenly treasures she was further stimulated by reading the lives of the saints, so that she led a pious life, very detached from this world, while dwelling at her parental home.
When she reached marriageable age - although not lacking numerous and respected suitors - she decided to remain a virgin, and joined the Third Order of St Francis. She found several pious virgins with whom she led a monastic life in her father's house.
In 1486, with the approval of Pope Innocent VII, who held her in very high esteem, she converted the institute into a real monastery, and by the Pope's express order became its first superior; she also built a convent church, which was dedicated to the honour of St Mary Magdalene. She died full of merits, foreseeing her death, 80 years old, around the year 1500. (Hueb.)
