SAINT ACEPSIMAS, PRIEST AND HERMIT
In the early 5th century, Saint Acepsimas lived as a hermit in a small house somewhere in Syria, which he locked completely in order to be spared all visits and conversations of the people. At the kind encouragement of his bishop, he was ordained a priest, but died a short time later.
Because of St Acepsimas' reputation of holiness the residents of various neighbouring areas rushed to get hold of his relics. In the process, fierce arguments ensued between them. The dispute was eventually settled with one man claiming that he himself had been commissioned by the saint to bury him on the spot where he died.
In art, St Acepsimas is depicted in the midst of some wilderness, a large chain wound around his body. (mg)
