SAINT ACHILLAS, PATRIARCH OF ALEXANDRIA
Saint Achillas (Archelaus) was Bishop or Patriarch of Alexandria and the successor of St Peter, who had been martyred in A.D. 311.
Many, including the Bollandists*, object that he took the side of Arius and restored this heretic to the communion of the Church, and hesitate to place him among the "saints"; but his public veneration is beyond doubt, since his name is in the Roman Martyrology* on November 7, and it is said of him there that "he distinguished himself through his faith, his learning and general philanthropy."
He died in the year 313. St Alexander succeeded him. In a Greek synaxarium his feast day is listed on June 3; on the other hand, according to the Bollandists*, he is said to have died on June 13; but why the Roman Martyrology* features his name is on November 7 cannot be ascertained more precisely.
