SAINT ASTRICUS, ARCHBISHOP OF GRAN
Saint Astricus, the first archbishop of Gran (Strigonium) in Hungary, initially was a monk at the monastery of St Alexius of Rome.
Together with the pious Italian Count Theodat he afterwards travelled to Hungary to assist in the conversion of its inhabitants. The evangelisation process had been begun by the holy Bishop Adalbert of Prague.
St Stephen of Hungary, who founded several bishoprics, raised Astricus to the Episcopal Chair of Calocza. He subsequently became Archbishop of Gran. In this function he crowned St Stephen king in A.D. 1000. St Astricus died in 1009. (El., Mg.)
