SAINT BIRISTAN, BISHOP OF WINCHESTER
Saint Biristan (Biristanus, Brinstanus), bishop of Winchester, was a disciple of St Grimbald. His elevation to the episcopal See of Winchester, which the pious Trithestan had resigned, was due to Biristan's excellent knowledge and virtues.
A bishop of outstanding sanctity, he daily prayed the Mass for the dead and, moreover, recited the psalms in the churchyard at night for their peaceful repose.
He died on November 4, 934 without previous illness. His successor was St Elphegus the Bald (St Elphege, March 12) (El., But.)
St Biristan is also commemorated on February 24 and April 22.
