SAINT CTESIPHON, BISHOP OF VERGIO
Saint Ctesiphon was a first century Bishop of Vergio (Vergium). Together with some others he had been ordained by the apostles at Rome and sent by them to proclaim the gospel in Spain. At length, Ctesiphon died at Vergio.
It is not clear whether this Vergio is the town formerly known as Vergilia, whether it is the same location that is called Vergis by some sources, or indeed whether it is the place called Veria today.
Likewise, it is not certain whether the saint was of Arabian descent, as some have suggested.
On May 15, on which day he also occurs in the Roman Martyrology*, he is venerated along with the other six Spanish apostles. April 1 is his individual feast day. On May 15, the Bollandists*, too, elaborate on the arrival of these bishop missionaries in Spain (see Torquatus).
