SAINT ROMAN THAUMATURGUS
Saint Roman the Miracle Worker (Romanus Thaumaturgus) was a monk at Antioch in Syria. He flourished in the 5th century and was a native of Rhosus (Rhossi) in Cilicia. He lived outside the city of Antioch on a mountain, where he dwelt in a narrow cave until old age.
His was a strict and poor life. His food consisted entirely of bread with salt, his drink was water. Under his clothes he wore a penitential ring made of iron.
He used to exhort those who came to him to brotherly love and piety. The mere sight of him inspired many to a real awe and fear of God. St Roman's intercession proved so strong that he was given the name "Miracle Worker".
St Roman Thaumaturgus is also commemorated on February 9 and March 31.
