WILLIAM OF SIGNY, MONK
William (Guilielmus) was a 12th century Benedictine abbot at the monastery Mont d'Or or St Thierry (S. Theodarici in Monte aureo) near Reims.
While Bernard, with whom he was good friends, was still alive, William renounced his abbey and became a Cistercian at Signy in France.
The Cistercians include him in their list of saints. Apart from a Life of St Bernard he also wrote a commentary on St Paul's Letter to the Romans and another on the Song of Songs from the Bible, as well as several treatises. According to Lechner*, he died in 1160.
He is also commemorated on January 12.
