WOLFOLD, ABBOT
This servant of God was canon and provost at the episcopal church in Freising [South Germany] for a long time.
Eventually, he renounced this dignity and became a Benedictine monk on the Petersberg in Eisenhosen (around the year 1104), from where he then moved to St Georgen in the Black Forest in order to attain greater perfection in the spiritual life under the guidance of the abbot Theogerus.
His superior found him so capable that he was able to recommend him to the pious Archbishop Conrad I of Salzburg (who ruled from 1106-1147) as a candidate for the position of abbot at the Admont monastery, which had been founded in 1074.
In this dignity Wolfold met all expectations so perfectly that he was entrusted with the task of reforming all Styrian monasteries. In doing so he had to suffer a great deal of hardship, even abuse, mistreatment and imprisonment by those who tried to resist his efforts of overhauling the religious institutions. He concluded his holy life on November 1, 1137.
