BLESSED STEPHEN, BISHOP OF BOURGES
Blessed Stephen (Stephanus), bishop of Bourges (Bituricensis), lived a very withdrawn and simple life. Unlike some contemporaries, he did not have an army of domestic and other staff. His household members were a priest and just one servant, for his principle was that the goods of the church were the inheritance of the poor; therefore he should live like a poor man, and any surplus must go towards alms for the needy. Bishop Stephen died on January 13, 835, after having presided over his church with all piety for eight years.
He is not found in the register of the bishops of Bourges. He is venerated at St Outrille du Chaleau.
Blessed Stephen is also commemorated on February 13.
