HARUTH, BISHOP OF VERDEN
[Haruth] (Harruchus, Harrucus), a Scotsman, initially abbot of Amorbach, later became eighth bishop of Verden (Verda, Verdia, Verdena) on the Aller (in the kingdom of Hanover). The successor of bishop Isenger, this man "full of all virtues" died around the year 831. According to Zedler* (XLVII. 326), Abbot Patto of Amorbach held the episcopal position in the past, but Abbot Haruth received the real dignity of a bishop in 803. Many hagiographers, including Bucelin* among others, number him among the "saints," while Mabillon* and the Bollandists* could find no grounds for such an attribute.
