VENERABLE HILDEBRAND OF FLANDERS, ABBOT
Venerable Hilderbrand (Hildebrandus) was a grandson of Count Arnulph of Flanders. Due to his piety and disciplinary conduct - rather than his noble descent - he was elected abbot. Hildebrand proved himself to be an excellent leader of his monastery of Saint Bertin and was therefore also entrusted with the direction of the abbey of Saint Vedast (St Vaast or Waast) in Arras. The Saints Wallericus and Nicharius were buried during his abbacy, with great miracles happening at this solemn event. He died in A.D. 968 as abbot of Saint Vedast. (Buc. Suppl.)
