MARIA SANCHEZ OF LORCA, VIRGIN
Maria Sanchez was a devout nun of the Third Order of Saint Francis at the monastery of Saint Anne in Lorca in southern Spain. She lived with the saintly founder Elizabeth Pontia and her two godly daughters at the time when this pious society came into being and probably died in A.D. 1520. Several writers consider her to have been the natural, not just spiritual, daughter of Elizabeth Pontia. She is sometimes confused with Lucia Pontia. Just as Maria was blessed with consolations in life, so after her death miraculous cures were reported following prayers near her relics. Sannig* calls her a "blessed penitent". (J.M.R.)
