PEDRO DE GANTE, MISSIONARY
Peter [Pieter van der Moere], of Ghent, a Franciscan, died in 1572 in Mexico, after having been a missionary for 50 years, although he did not ever want to become a priest because of his humility.
By word and writing, as well as by building churches, founding schools, etc., Peter had done an incredible amount for the Christianisation of the country.
From him, the poor, truly "simple" lay brother, the Mexicans learned to read, write, sing and play instrumental music. He also gave lessons in painting, carving and other arts. He destroyed many idol temples. His work was like that of a bishop. In Hueber* he is also listed on September 27 with the name de Mura [Pedro de Mura].
