RAINER, PRIEST AND MARTYR
Rainer (Rainerius a Lintris) a Franciscan, was a preacher at Roermond. He died a martyr in A.D. 1572.
The terrorists of the country at the time found him praying in front of the tabernacle, fell upon him in the most rough manner, taunted, beat and insulted him, an unarmed man. They then forcefully put the priestly garb on him and began to organise a mocking procession in which they led him through the city. They tormented Rainer in every possible way with blasphemous songs and speeches. Finally they cut off his nose and ears and tortured him until he gave up the ghost. With him suffered his fellow monk Gorgnius a Malderto. (Hub.)
