SAINT AUSPICIUS, BISHOP OF APT

A page of one of Fortunatus Hueber's
Saints' books,
"Stammenbuch..." (1693)

Saint Auspicius, was the first bishop of Apt in France. If the information in the French Breviaries is correct, Auspicius was a Roman citizen, from one of the Senator's families, tutor of Flavia Domitilla (the niece of Emperor Domitian), and pupil of Saints Nereus and Achilleus. After having buried the bodies of his holy teachers, Auspicius preached the gospel in Apt and sealed his teaching with his blood. According to Migne*, he went to his eternal reward in the year 398.
