BLESSED RAYMOND OF FITERO, ABBOT
Blessed Raymond (Raymundus), abbot of Fitero (Hitero), is the founder of the Knightly Order of Calatrava, which he presided over for six years, and is mentioned as such in the Order's menologies.
His place of birth was Tarragona. He attended the monastic school in Scala Dei, and afterwards founded the monastery of Fitero. Nothing else is known of him.
In 1468, pope Paul II gave permission for the solemn translation of Raymond's relics, which is, according to Bucelin* and other hagiographers, celebrated on March 5. (Mart I. 358). Blessed Raymond is also commemorated on March 15 and April 30.
