SYLVESTER, PRIEST AND RELIGIOUS
Sylvester (Silvester) was the first priest of the Order of Saint Francis. A contemporary of the holy Founder of the Order, Sylvester died in Assisi in A.D. 1240.
His conversion was prompted by a dream vision he experienced three nights in a row, in which he saw Saint Francis, from whose mouth sprouted a shining cross. This cross grew until it reached heaven, and its splendour drove away a terrible dragon that was threatening the city of Assisi. (I. 299)
