SAINT EPISTENE, MARTYR
Saint Epistene is listed on November 15. Of this saint, Menzel* (Symb. I. 138) cites from Surius that when she was martyred, Epistene had been stripped naked beforehand. 53 bystanders who were trying to watch her being tortured without any clothes on were blinded instantly. This holy martyr is otherwise identical with Saint Epistemis, (November 5), a martyr at Emesa (now Hems), a Syrian city on the Orontes. She was a companion of Saint Galation and is inserted in the Roman Martyrology*. (El.)
