SAINT ERKENBODO, BISHOP OF THEROUANNE

In A.D. 710, Erkenbodo (Erchenbodo) became abbot of the Belgian Benedictine monastery of Sithiu.

Because of his virtue and knowledge he was elevated to the episcopal see of Therouanne six years later. Erkenbodo remained bishop for 26 years without ever letting go the administration of the Sithiu Abbey.

He died in 742 and was buried in the church of the monastery of Saint Omer (Audomar). The Therouanne breviary says that he was always venerated as a saint. One of his biographers claims that Erkenbodo was elected abbot in 717 (rather than 710), became bishop in 720 and confirms that he died in 742. (II. 92)
