SAINT ERMELINDIS, VIRGIN
Saint Ermelindis (Ermelina). Her name is derived from the old German ermen, meaning harm, quarrel, [and lind, soothing], i.e. alleviating the quarrel, peacemaker.
This saintly Virgin was a native of the area of Leuven [Belgium]. From an early age, she showed great love for the exercises of piety from and, in order to be able to devote herself entirely to these, withdrew into solitude, which she never left except to attend the holy Mass. To avoid being pursued by young nobles who had marriage on their minds, she moved from Bevec to the remote Maldrik (Meldaert) in Brabant. After a holy hermit's life she passed to her eternal reward towards the end of the 6th century.
Her veneration was very widespread in the latter place. The saint is also mentioned under the name Ermelina on August 13 and 19. Our saint is not to be confused with Saint Ermenilda (the mother of Saint Wereburga (Withburge). (Aug. III. 699. But. XV. 590)
