SAINT ERMENILDA, QUEEN AND ABBESS
Saint Ermenilda was the daughter of King Ercombert of Kent and Saint Sexburga [Seaxburgh], his wife. When she had grown up, she married Wulfer, king of the Mercians. Her active faith and holy zeal for God passed at least in part to her royal husband, so that he endeavoured to destroy the remnants of idolatry, to build up Christian churches and to have the gospel preached.
Following Wulfer's death in A.D. 675 after 17 years of reign, Ermenilda, now a widow, entered the Ely monastery, where her daughter Werburga had taken the veil earlier and her mother Sexburga was abbess. She later became the latter's successor in the office of abbess and died in 703. Grandmother, mother and daughter thus sought sanctification in one and the same monastery and died in the splendour of sanctity. (II. 686)
