SAINT EUBERT, BISHOP
The biography of Saint Eubert (Eubertus) who is also called Eugenius by some writers, seem to have perished in the devastations of the Normans. Perhaps a "Life of Saint Eubert" never existed in the first place. Saint Eubert is generally assumed to have been a contemporary of Saint Chrysolus and an assistant of Saint Piat (Piatus), Apostle of Tournay. He may have died in the beginning of the 4th century and is often given the title of bishop. Initially, his mortal remains rested at Seclin at Saint Piat's Church, but were later transferred to the city itself, to the Collegiate Church of Saint Peter. In A.D. 1228, Bishop Walther of Tournay examined Eubert's relics and certified them as genuine.
Eubert has always been greatly venerated in Flanders. He is the patron saint of Lille, where he is venerated on February 1. According to Butler*(II. 307), Eubert is mentioned the "Roman Register of Martyrs"; but we could not locate his name in that source. (I. 47)
