SAINT EUGENIUS, RELIGIOUS
Today we also commemorate Saint Eugenius, a monk in Bithynia. This was the father of Saint Marina, who, having become a widower, decided to spend the rest of his life in the service of the Lord. He gave his only young daughter to a relative, and joined a monastery a few miles from the town where he lived. There, by carefully observing all the rules, he won the respect and love of his abbot.
But his longing for his beloved little daughter often caused him to sigh deeply with sadness. The abbot, noticing it, asked him the cause, and since Eugenius honestly admitted it, the abbot bade him go and look for his child and bring her to the monastery. Eugenius now brought his daughter Marina, changed her name to Marinus, and led her to high perfection. She was 17 when he died. His last admonitions, addressed to her, were to observe the rule faithfully, and [for her safety in an entirely male environment, which was her beloved home] never to reveal that she was not a male monk but a lady.
